Thriving at work

The problem

The October 2017 ‘Thriving at Work’ Government report into mental health in the work place, shows there is a severe problem with people leaving work because of mental health.

  • 300,000 people with long term mental health conditions leave their workplace each year; a further 2% leave work as a result of physical ill health;
  • The cost is 99 billion pounds!

What to do?

The report says that all employers of any size in the UK should adopt six “core standards” for improving mental health at work:

  1. Produce, implement and communicate a “mental health at work” plan.
  2. Develop mental health awareness among employees.
  3. Encourage open conversations about mental health and the support available when employees are struggling.
  4. Provide employees with good working conditions.
  5. Promote effective people management.
  6. Routinely monitor employee mental health and wellbeing.
